Why We are Made for These Times

Dear Relatives,

We live in a time like no other. A climate clock is ticking as politicians sow division.

Yet we are not here by accident—we were made for these times. We are resilient. We are needed. And we are fearlessly armed with love.

In 2018 Movement Rights had a year of victories, hope and action. We were inspired by the depth and bravery of our movements, the leadership of Indigenous peoples and grassroots communities, and the wins for the rights of nature.

We were honored to be part of great work happening at home, and around the world. Please watch and share our 1-minute video of Movement Rights in 2018.

With your support and partnership in 2018 we:

Helped pass the first rights of nature law on tribal land in the U.S.;
Learned from the Maori people how they recognized the legal spiritual rights of their ancestral mountains and rivers;
With our coalition partners we STOPPED the California Air Resources Board from fast-tracking approval on a carbon trading scheme that would negatively impact forest dwelling Indigenous people around the world and communities at home;
Co-coordinated a 3-day global Rights of Nature Symposium and strategy session in Quito, Ecuador as part of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature;
At the invitation of indigenous leaders in the Bolivian Amazon region of TIPNIS, led a highly publicized 4-person international commission to investigate government crimes against the rights of nature in their territory;
Joined our allies on the streets to fight for clean air, water and justice; spoke at national and international events, conferences, spoke truth to power at policy meetings and so much more…
